Clark M. Rivinoja Award

Clark Rivinoja passed away suddenly on March 13, 2008. His loss left our program in shock and grief, and over the past two years we have missed him deeply. To honor Clark and the impact he had on others in our program we have established an annual award in his name. Funding for this award has been given generously by his family and friends. The Clark M. Rivinoja Award will be given each year to a junior researcher or student who is new to clinical psychology research. The recipient will be nominated by faculty and staff in our program, and will receive $500 to be used towards the process of preparation for or application to science-based graduate programs in psychology. Nominations will be considered for individuals who, like, Clark, have a passion for helping others and a newfound love for science. Importantly, individuals will be considered who bring generosity of time, creativity, and good humor-- all gifts that Clark had in spades. The recipient of the 2009 Clark M. Rivinoja Award is Ryan Perdomo.

In recognition of this award, Ryan states "I would like to thank Dr. Rosenthal and the rest of the E.M.B. Brout SPERP research team. It is an honor to be recognized for an award that commemorates the spirit and memory of Clark Rivinoja. I owe much of my undergraduate research experience to Clark. Clark introduced me to the ongoing project almost two years ago that I have continued to the end of my undergraduate career. My research experience in the lab has added a unique dynamic to my learning experience at Duke that no other course offering could have fulfilled. I will forever be grateful to Clark for his mentorship and camaraderie. Most importantly, I will always remember the jokes and laughter we shared. My plans after graduation are to continue conducting research for the next two years with the intent of enrolling in a doctorate program in psychology or medical school directly thereafter." Congratulations Ryan!
